🔴 Hard Mode Survival Tips
Hard difficulty in Timberborn is a genuinely demanding challenge. Droughts arrive early, grow long fast, and Badtides become devastating. Every resource decision in the first few in-game years determines whether your colony survives to mid-game. Here are the non-negotiable Hard mode principles:
- 🌊 Build your Dam before day 15
On Hard, the first drought can arrive as early as in-game day 20. A reservoir is not optional.
- 🌲 Plant 3× more trees than you cut
Wood scarcity on Hard can stall Engine-powered Iron Teeth colonies completely. Foresters must always run ahead of Lumberjacks.
- 🤖 Prioritize Bot research
Bots are immune to Badwater and do not need food or water. On Hard, getting Bots operational before the first major Badtide is transformative.
- 💧 Build a separate clean water loop immediately
Don't wait for your first Badtide. Design a dedicated clean reservoir fed from sources you can manually isolate with Floodgates.
- 🌿 Folktails is generally easier on Hard
Free Windmill power and passive Observatory SP mean fewer resource dependencies. Iron Teeth Engines create a punishing fuel spiral on Hard mode.
🎛️ Custom Difficulty — Parameters Explained
Custom mode lets you independently tune every survival parameter. This is ideal for players who find one aspect too easy and another too hard. Common custom setups include:
Normal resources + Hard drought length + Hard Badtide intensity. For players who want to master water engineering without the resource scarcity pressure.
Easy difficulty overall with Normal badwater. For players who want to focus on city design and aesthetics without constant survival threat.
Hard all parameters + scarce resources + early first drought. The maximum challenge configuration. Recommended only for veteran players.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Easy and Normal difficulty in Timberborn? +
On Easy, droughts are short and infrequent, starting resources are generous, and the illness probability is 30% (meaning not all beavers exposed to Badwater will get sick). On Normal, droughts are moderate and progressively lengthen over time. Both modes are suitable for learning the game's mechanics before moving to Hard.
How hard is Hard difficulty in Timberborn? +
Hard difficulty features scarce starting resources, severe long droughts from the early game, aggressive Badtides, and 100% illness probability (every Badwater-exposed beaver gets sick). Droughts and Badtides escalate significantly with each cycle. Hard mode is recommended only after completing at least one Normal game.
Can I customize difficulty in Timberborn? +
Yes. Custom difficulty allows you to set independent sliders for drought length, drought frequency, badwater intensity, starting resources, and illness probability. This lets you create bespoke challenge levels — for example, Normal drought with Hard badwater.
Does difficulty affect the tech tree or buildings available? +
No. All buildings and tech tree content are available on every difficulty. Only the environmental survival parameters change. Difficulty does not lock or unlock any buildings, factions, or mechanics.
